EMBODYING THE SOURCE OF MEANING

Liology offers to replace the dualistic mind/body split of conventional Western thought with an approach to life that finds value to be intrinsic to our embodied experience.

western dualistic mindset

Part of the Western heritage from the ancient Greeks is the dualistic mindset that conceived of an eternal soul trapped temporarily in the human body, and of reason – separated from emotion – as the faculty that put us in touch with divinity.

Following Descartes, this was transformed in the Western tradition to the modern mind/body split, which is so pervasive in our culture that even science-based futurists conceive of scenarios where our brains (purported to be our selves) could be downloaded onto computers.

This dualistic split in our sense of self devalues the wisdom of our bodies and precludes any fully integrated experience of being human.

a unified human organism

The Liology Institute intends to promote somatic and energy based practices, such as qigong or tai-chi, that encourage a conscious understanding and experience of body and mind as one unified human organism, while linking these explicitly to current findings in cognitive science and neuroscience showing the mind to be a fully embodied emergent process.
